Donald Henry Vance, 81, of Decatur, died at 10:21 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in St. Mary’s Hospital.
Funeral service to celebrate Don’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2016, at the Forsyth United
Methodist Church (210 Ruehl Street, Forsyth, Illinois) with Pastor Andy Maxwell officiating. Visitation will be one
hour before service time at the church. A private burial service will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Riverton,
Illinois. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.
Don was born in March of 1935, in Decatur son of Benjamin H. and Beulah Lucille Vance.
He retired from the U.S. Army Security Agency after a long military career. He was a highly decorated soldier,
earning the Legion of Merit and Joint Services Commendation Medal. He also retired from the Illinois State Job
Services as a veteran’s representative.
Don continued to serve his community as a bus driver for Decatur Housing, a volunteer with Kiwanis Club and an
active church member until illness finally stopped him. He was a member of the Forsyth United Methodist Church
and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His hobbies included anything about golf. Don married Virginia in July of 1953.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ginny Vance of Decatur, Illinois; sons, Louis Scott (Marlene) Vance of
Culpeper, Virginia, Ronald L. (Kim) Vance of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter, Kathie Vance of Jasper, Indiana; eight
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jimmie Dale Vance; sisters, Margaret Miller and Phyllis Logan; and
brother, Asa Vance.
Don was a great husband, father, grandpa and friend to many and he will be deeply missed.
