1928 - 2016

Austin “Harry” Young, 87 of Decatur died 11:19 a.m. Thursday February 4, 2016.

Funeral service to celebrate his life will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 9, 2016 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be one hour before at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Memorials may be made to
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Gideon’s International. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral
Service and Care is in charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Young was born in October of 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Austin S. and Anna Young. Harry was a
manufacturing company executive, researcher and consultant.

He was a 1950 graduate of Tufts University (magna cum laude) and received his doctorate in philosophy (physical
chemistry, Standard Oil (Indiana) Fdn Fellow) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Chemist E. I. DuPont de

Products Dept., 1984-85, senior research scientist/mgr. physical testing 1985-87, consultant 1987; consultant,
Archer Daniels Midland Co., Decatur, IL., 1987-90; A. E. Staley Mfg. Co. Decatur, IL., 1990-92. Author (with
others) Radiolytic and Photochemical Decomposition and Exchange in Liquid and Gaseous
Bromotrichloromethane, 1962; Chemistry and Properties of Crosslinked Polymers, 1977; Fractionation of Starch,
1984; Polymerizable Cellulose Esters In Ultraviolet Cure Coatings, 1985, many U.S. and foreign patents in field.  He
was very active with numerous positions at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and The
Gideon’s International. He was a member of Lincoln Trails Council BSA, He served in the U.S. Army 1952-54. He
was the recipient of the IR-100 award Indsl. Research and Delvl., Mus. Sci. and Industry, Chicago, IL., 1978.
Emeritus 50 yr member Am. Chem. Assn. Cereal Chemists, AAAS, Soc. Plastics Engineers, Sigma Xi (Research), Phi
Lambda Upsilon (Chemistry), Alpha Chi Sigma (Chem. Professional), American Legion Post 105, Soy City Striders
Running Club, Decatur Athletic Club. He married Elizabeth J. Frank in January of 1958.

Surviving are his daughters, Katherine Young-Schiffman and husband Mark, Carmel, Indiana, Diane Elizabeth
Piontek and fiancée Mike Dalluge, Decatur, grandchildren, Madeline Brown, Columbia, MO., Sophie Brown,
Edwardsville, Illinois, Julia Schiffman, Manabi, Ecuador, Paul Schiffman, Bloomington, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter and loving wife Betty.
