James LeRoy Owens

James LeRoy Owens, 91, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2015, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.  He was born in August of 1924, the son of Ernest S. and
Alice L. Owens.  He married Lois Stedman of Anacortes, Washington, in March of 1946.  Jim and Lois met while Jim was stationed at the US Naval Air Base on
Whidbey Island (Washington), and made their home first in Springfield, Illinois, and eventually in Decatur, Illinois.

Jim attended Springfield High School, but like many young American men, felt the call to join the Armed Forces and serve his country during World War II,
doing so shortly after his 18th birthday and prior to graduating from high school.  Jim served from 1942 until 1946 as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2/c, and
spent much of his time in the service at the US Naval Air Base in Kobler, Saipan.  Jim was the recipient of the American Area Asiatic-Pacific Victory Medal and
served his country well.

Following the end of Jim’s time in the service, he finished his schooling and began a career, spending much of his working life in management at The Great
Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (better known as A&P) and with Gerber as a baby food salesperson and manager.  As a man of great faith, Jim also served many
years as a church elder with Northwest Christian Church in Decatur and was actively involved with Antioch Christian Church, also in Decatur.

Jim was a loving father of four children – Janet Terry who preceded him in death (Rick) of Fullerton, California; Gary Owens (Cathy) of Vancouver,
Washington; Dennis Owens (Juwariah) of Spring, Texas; and Tim Owens (Lori) of Kirkland, Washington; and the proud grandfather of eight; and great-
grandfather of twenty. Jim was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn Sutton and Jane Scattergood.

Jim was a man of faith who loved his family, friends and his Savior.  He gave selflessly to all who asked and to all in need.  Our lives are forever changed and
influenced by him.  We will remember him always. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed immediately by a Memorial Service at 6:00 p.
m. on Monday, October 19, at Antioch Christian Church, 5409 US-36, Decatur, IL 62521.

Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care will be assisting with arrangements.
