Valeria Ann Stringer, 94, of Decatur, passed away at her home on Monday,         
November 26, 2018, with her son at her side.

Ann was born in Latham, Illinois, in June of 1924, the daughter of George R. and Esther
E. Waddell. She graduated from Latham High School in 1942, and attended Illinois State
Normal University where she met Charles S. Stringer of Lincoln. They were married in
October of 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and remained there for the duration of World
War II. They later lived in Ames, Iowa, where Ann worked while Charles finished his
education. She was one of the generation of women who said they got their “PHT
degrees” by Putting Hubby Through. They lived for a few years in Peoria before moving
to Decatur in 1957.

Ann was an active community volunteer, helping at Mound and Parsons schools as room
mother, Brownie leader, and PTA president; with Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
in the flower workshop and gift shop, doing much of the shop's buying for several years;
and as a member of First Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School and
was active in Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Sunnycrest Unit of Home
Extension for over 50 years, and a Democratic election judge for at least thirty years.
She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for herself since her teens.

She is survived by her children, Stephen C. Stringer of Decatur and Cheryl A. (Mark)
Pence of Springfield; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley and Dorothy Stringer
of Falls Church, VA; six nieces and one nephew; and many great-nieces, great-nephews,
and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 2014; an infant
daughter, Sharon; her sister and brother-in-law, Billy Jo and Donald Cooper; and her

Services will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at First Congregational Church in
Decatur, with visitation from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and memorial service following at      
12:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, 3465 N. MacArthur
Rd, Decatur IL 62526, for their elevator fund. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care
of Decatur is in charge of arrangements.
